"Science for peace and security: NATO organizes an international conference in Varna

The topic is "Digital technologies and increased cyber resilience in countries in transition

On September 8, 2024 in Varna was opened International Conference on Prospective Research on the NATO Program “Science for Peace and Security” on the topic “Digital technologies and increased cyber resilience in countries in transition”.

The conference is organized by the Department of National Security of the University of Library Science and Information Technology on the Bulgarian side and by the Research Center of the US Army Corps of Engineers.

During the opening, Vice Admiral Mitko Petev – adviser to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, read a congratulatory address from the President of the Republic of Bulgaria and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Rumen Radev. Congratulatory addresses were also announced by the Minister of Defense Atanas Zapryanov and the Chief of Defense Admiral Emil Eftimov. A welcome was also given by the University of Library Science and Information Technology – by the Rector Prof. Irena Peteva and by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof. Stoyan Denchev. The participants and guests of the seminar were also greeted on behalf of the president of the Atlantic Club in Bulgaria, Dr. Solomon Passy.

NATO's “Science for Peace and Security” aims to improve cooperation and dialogue with all partners through citizen science and innovation. The conferences and seminars held under its auspices contribute to the assessment of existing knowledge on important security science and technology topics and are designed to build networks between scientists from NATO member countries and partner countries.

The partner country in this case is Ukraine, from which representatives of the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Institute for Energy Modeling are participating “G. E. Pukhov“ to the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers from many other countries also take part in the seminar – a total of about 60 participants from 14 countries on 4 continents – Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

The workshop provides participants with an opportunity to better understand the science, engineering, implementation and value of sustainability-based solutions for complex information infrastructure, as well as discuss new methodologies for quantifying and managing for ensuring resilience in the face of conflicts, increasing complexity of the situation, deliberate disinformation and other threats.

During the conference, interesting and in-depth discussions are held, on separate panels, within its program.

On the Bulgarian side, in addition to researchers on the subject from the University of Library Science and Information Technologies, representatives of the institutions within the National Scientific Program “Security and Defense”, as well as scientists and researchers from the non-governmental sector.

The conference will continue its work until September 12’ 2024
