The President from Sarajevo: Bulgaria must restore its leading role in the Balkans - 1

President Rumen Radev appealed to Bulgarian politicians. He urged them to solve their internal problems as soon as possible. During his visit to Sarajevo, the head of state identified security in Bosnia and Herzegovina as a matter of strategic importance for the entire region.

An hour sooner, Bulgaria must restore its leading role in the Balkans - President Rumen Radev is convinced. From Sarajevo, he addressed the Bulgarian politicians and parties:

"Where did this Bulgaria remain, which was the first to react to all important problems in the region, which led in decision-making, which was the first to support? I think it's high time we pulled our heads out of the sand, stopped dealing with our domestic, provincial and family squabbles and got back to where we belong, because I want to tell you from all the meetings so far that in Bosnia and Herzegovina they see Bulgaria as a worthy strong member of NATO, of the EU."

President Rumen Radev defined security in Bosnia and Herzegovina as a matter of strategic importance for the entire region. And he added that Bulgaria remains firmly committed to the mission of the European operation "Althea".

The main purpose of “Althea” is the establishment of a multi-ethnic police service in Bosnia and Herzegovina to operate in accordance with international standards. The President highly appreciated the work of the Bulgarian contingent of military personnel at the "Butmir" military base:

"Bulgaria continues to help the armed forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina so that they reach a higher standard in their training and of course on their way to NATO membership, although there is currently no political consensus on this membership. I continue to explain to the authorities here that they should look at the history of the recent history of Eastern Europe - all the countries that are currently members of the EU have previously become members of NATO."

The President held meetings in the Parliamentary Assembly, met with the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, spoke with the supreme representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Rumen Radev laid a wreath at the memorial plaque, a symbol of friendship between Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo.
