Kristian Vigenin: The commitments of the Republic of North Macedonia are to the entire European Union, not just to Bulgaria - 1

„Bulgaria is pursuing a stable financial policy and is developing economically steadily. The positive convergence reports on the country's entry into the eurozone confirm this. We have made great efforts to reach this point.“ This was stated by the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin to Radio „Focus“. He added that this is good news for the entire European Union, as it shows that integration is stronger.

„From now on, serious work is ahead, an active explanatory campaign for the introduction of the euro is necessary. It must include all parties that are relevant to this process“, the MEP emphasized.

Christian Vigenin also commented on the Bulgarian MEPs' request to postpone the vote on the Progress Report on North Macedonia. “We expressed our doubts regarding the procedures in the preparation of this report. The findings are not impartial. The Macedonian side definitely had information about what proposals would be made, it was agreed with them, but not with us - what would be included in the so-called compromise proposals. This is not normal“, he said. Vigenin highlighted the fact that all MEPs signed the letter, and this is a clear signal to the European Parliament that the problem is serious. According to him, what happened will serve as a lesson to prevent similar situations from occurring. Decisions should be made in the European Parliament, not in the capitals of the countries that want to become EU members.

„The commitments of the Republic of North Macedonia are to the entire European Union, not to Bulgaria specifically. The downgrading of the issue as a bilateral one, which the Macedonian side is trying to do, cannot work and it would be short-sighted to fall into this trap. No matter how much we simplify the procedures, in the end the commitments must be fulfilled.

The member states must meet the principles, requirements and conditions under each negotiation chapter. Everything is in the hands of the Macedonian side. Once they do, the process will continue from there“, commented the head of the Delegation of Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament.
