On December 7, one of the emblems of France - the Notre Dame Cathedral - will be open for visitors again. French President Emmanuel Macron will deliver a special speech on this occasion. During his speech, the president will talk about the fulfillment of the promise to "open the cathedral in 5 years, which he made in an address to the nation after the fire” in 2019. The Archbishop of Paris, Laurent Ulrich, said Macron would speak "inside the cathedral”, not outside.
Notre Dame Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was engulfed in a fire in April 2019 that destroyed its roof and tower. During the first 2 years after the fire in the cathedral, the consequences continued to be removed and the technical preparation for the restoration works was carried out. The restoration alone cost the French state EUR 700 million.
The restoration of “Notre Dame“ is one of the most complex ever performed on such a site. During the first 2 years after the fire, work was done entirely on strengthening the structure of the building. The aim was to ensure that it would not collapse when the restoration works were carried out. Thus, the de facto recovery phase began in September 2021.
In “Notre Dame“ there are 120 stained glass windows. They were created in the period XII-XX centuries. A large part of them have been restored. A large number of the frescoes located inside the cathedral have also been restored. The walls are also basically cleaned of smoke and the effects of extinguishing the fire.
The designer Guillaume Bardet is charged with the difficult task of creating the elements related to the services – altar, pulpit, cathedral, baptistery, as well as the seats for the faithful. He is committed to minimalism and clean forms. It will mainly use materials such as oak and bronze.
