The Sofia City Court will announce tomorrow, on December 13, 2024, its verdict in the case of the death of 19-year-old Deyana Georgieva, who died in 2011 after complications during childbirth. Six doctors from two capital hospitals stand in front of Themis to hear the court's decision on a case that has become an emblematic example of the slow administration of justice in Bulgaria.
In 2011, the young woman entered the hospital for the birth of her first child. One month later, her life ended tragically. The initial accusation of the prosecutor's office is about professional negligence on the part of the medical staff.
The latest forensic examination of the case brought an unexpected twist, rejecting the initial version of the cause of death. According to the examination, there is no evidence that Deyana died of sepsis caused by a forgotten placenta in the uterus. As a result, the prosecution refused to maintain the charges against the medics.
"We are fighting this battle alone, without the support of the state prosecution,", say the relatives of the deceased mother. Thirteen years later, her family continues to seek justice in the courtroom.
