The reason for the floods in Europe is the massive amount of rainfall that fell over several days. A rare blocking situation occurred in the atmosphere which caused this cyclone, instead of continuing to the east, to make a turn - first to the east, then to the north and finally to the northwest - and returned to where it had formed. Blocking it is an area of high atmospheric pressure that stretches over Asia and eastern Europe. Such areas are formed, but now it is unusually pronounced. One of the reasons for this is the high temperature of the Arctic Ocean.
This is what Prof. Emil Gachev from the Institute for Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research at the BAS told NOVA NEWS.
„Cyclones form on this ocean because of the vapors, and the land begins to cool down slowly and is cool against the background of the warm seas. Air over cool land cools and pressure rises. A cloud is formed, which blocks the path of the cyclones,”, the professor also explained. Gachev said that at this stage there is no risk of similar climatic phenomena in Bulgaria.
The expert also commented on the drought in the country. He said the dry spell in the summer was long, which we were not prepared for. “The preparation is as follows – at the end of May, the state must calculate how much water it has. There needs to be a guaranteed supply in late spring to make sure we don't run out of water in such a dry episode. And now in many places the dams were not prepared," the expert pointed out. Gachev said that systematic care should be taken for the water basins.
