We officially say goodbye to summer on the day of the autumnal equinox – around September 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and March 21 in the Southern Hemisphere.

The autumn months in the Northern Hemisphere are September, October and November.

We will welcome the new season with mostly sunny weather. The gradual increase in minimum and maximum temperatures is expected from September 22.

In the morning, there will be short-lived fogs again over the lowlands and valleys. Around and in the afternoon, the forecast is for the development of cumulus clouds, but the probability of precipitation is small.

By Wednesday afternoon, however, showers with thunder are expected over Western Bulgaria.

Autumn is a transitional season with sometimes quite high temperatures at the beginning, called in our country “gypsy summer”, and quite to lower towards the end of the period.

Astronomical winter this year occurs on December 21st at 11:20 a.m. It is then the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year (9 hours and 3 minutes for Sofia).

We will switch to winter time on October 27, Sunday. Then at 4 o'clock the hands will go back 1 hour and it will be 3 o'clock.

The data on the change of seasons and the transition to winter time are from Pencho Markishki from the Institute of Astronomy at the BAS.
