The European Car Free Day is held annually on the 22 September, writes Trafiknews.
The idea of holding such a day comes from France and was implemented for the first time in 1998. It is an international campaign during which the central areas of many European cities are closed to car traffic.
The objectives of the campaign are:
- formation of ecological thinking and also a way of life among European citizens;
- explanatory activity on the negative aspects of road transport in urban conditions;
- promotion of alternative modes of transport in large cities, incl. the wider use of public transport;
- a demonstration of the idea that life without cars is not only possible, but also more pleasant.
The campaign “European Car Free Day” aims to reduce noise and harmful gas emissions in the air, as well as improve the quality of life in large cities.
