The legendary Chinese mountaineer from Tibet - Gonpo, who first climbed Everest (8848 m) on its northern slope as part of a group of Chinese climbers, died at the age of 91 in Sichuan province (Southwest China), the Chinese Central television.
Gonpo was part of a group of Chinese climbers who climbed the peak from its north side on May 25, 1960.
After the conquest, three climbers placed there a Chinese flag and a bust of the founder of the People's Republic of China, Mao Zedong. Gonpo was the last living participant in this historic ascent.
