The governor of Russia's Arctic region of Murmansk survived a knife attack, with investigators saying Friday they had arrested a man with a criminal record who said he carried out the attack out of "hateful" to the official, reports "Reuters".
The Kremlin said the assassination attempt, which took place after a town hall meeting on Thursday, should be investigated as quickly as possible.
MP Alexander Hinstein said Governor Andrei Chibis was saved by a guardsman who fired a warning shot into the air, then grabbed the attacker and wounded him in the leg.
A video posted on Chibis' Telegram channel shows him lying in a hospital bed after surgery and thanking doctors for saving him. The regional health ministry said his condition is still serious and will require further treatment.
The State Investigative Committee said the attacker, who also required medical attention, had been investigated for causing grievous bodily harm in the past.
"During the interrogation, the man explained that he carried out the attack because he did not like the governor, although he did not know him personally,", the message said.
It said forensic examinations, including a psychiatric examination, had been ordered.
