The UN Security Council has decided to respond by the end of this month to the request of the Palestinian Authority to obtain the status of a full member of the world organization, reported France Presse, quoted by BTA.
The issue was discussed at a meeting yesterday.
In September 2011, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas launched an initiative to "join the State of Palestine to the United Nations", which, however, never materialized, AFP recalls. In the end, the Palestinian Authority received observer status in the world organization in November of the following year.
Last week, however, it submitted a new request for full membership, citing the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
"This is a historic moment," said Palestinian Permanent Representative to the UN Riyad Mansour.
However, it is unlikely that the initiative will be crowned with success, notes AFP.
Observers have expressed an expectation that the United States will again impose a veto, as it did in 2011. The US position is that the future Palestinian state must be established in accordance with an agreement with Israel.
