The strike on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant power plant risks altering the war in Ukraine. This was stated by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, quoted by "Reuters".
He made his statement during the extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Directors.
In his words "the most recent attacks" have shown "a sharp sequential moment in this war".
Grossi stressed the importance of military decision-makers adhering to the IAEA's five specific principles for safeguarding nuclear safety and called on the world community to strive for de-escalation of the current dire situation.
"Attacking a nuclear power plant is absolutely prohibited. Attacking the Zaporizhzhya NPP means jeopardizing nuclear safety. Among those who may be most directly affected are the people who work at the headquarters and the IAEA experts," he warned.
Yesterday it became clear that the Governing Council of the International Atomic Energy Agency will hold an extraordinary meeting at the request of Russia to discuss the attacks on the Zaporizhia NPP.
Also yesterday, Russia accused Ukraine of a new drone attack on the Zaporizhia NPP, after drones also attacked the nuclear power plant - the largest in Europe - on Sunday, striking the main protective structures of one of the reactors. Then the IAEA specified that nuclear safety was not affected.
Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of attacks on the Zaporizhia NPP, which both sides deny.
