European foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said today, that he called for Tuesday, April 16, an emergency videoconference meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union in connection with the attack carried out by Iran against Israel, reported France Presse, quoted by BTA.
In the social network "X" Borrell also announced that he had spoken with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, to whom he stated that the EU "condemns in the strongest terms" strikes on Israel and has called on Iran not to engage in "further escalation".
"In this extremely tense regional situation, a new escalation would not be in anyone's interest. We invite all interested parties to exercise maximum restraint," Borel stressed in a statement on behalf of the 27 EU countries.
"The EU condemns in the strongest terms the Iranian drone and missile attacks against Israel. This is an unprecedented escalation and a threat to regional security," Borel also stated and emphasized that the EU "reaffirms its commitment to Israel's security".
"The European Union remains fully determined to contribute to de-escalation and security in the region and to this end is in close contact with all interested parties," he added.
