During a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping outlined four principles for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Chinese state media called them "four principles for preventing the crisis in Ukraine from spiraling out of control and restoring peace", reports the BBC.
The Chinese president said countries should focus on "maintaining peace and stability and refrain from seeking self-interest" and "cooling down the situation, not adding fuel to the fire".
"We must create conditions for the restoration of peace and refrain from further escalation of tensions," Xi said, noting that it is necessary to "reduce the negative impact on the world economy".
"The Four Principles" reflect Beijing's document from last year calling for a "political settlement" of the conflict. According to a number of Western observers, this will allow Russia to keep most of the captured Ukrainian territories.
Western countries' relations with China are going through turbulent times. A number of state aid investigations into Chinese manufacturers of solar panels, electric vehicles and wind turbines are underway in Brussels.
US is investigating national security risks posed by Chinese auto technology.
In his meeting with Scholz, Xi emphasized that "the industrial and production chains of China and Germany are deeply interconnected.
"The mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Germany is not a 'risk', but a guarantee for the stability of bilateral relations and an opportunity to create the future,'' Xi said.
Together with Scholz, a large delegation of ministers and heads of German enterprises arrived in China on Sunday.
