Russia used cluster munitions among missiles fired at the attack on the Ukrainian port city of Odessa, DPA reported, citing Ukrainian sources, writes BTA.
"This is an indiscriminate weapon that can cause significant casualties among the civilian population," the Ukrainian prosecutor's office said in "Telegram" in connection with yesterday's attack. Metal fragments were found within a radius of 1.5 km. from the impact site, the statement said.
The text was accompanied by a video showing the explosions caused by the Iskander ballistic missile. Yesterday, the Russian attack killed five people and injured another 30.
Ukrainian prosecutors have accused Russian servicemen of deliberately using cluster munitions to kill as many civilians as possible.
In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In the course of the conflict, both sides used cluster munitions – explosive weapons that explode on impact and deal damage in a large radius. Neither Russia nor Ukraine is a party to the international convention banning cluster munitions, which entered into force in 2010.
Ukraine recently fired US-supplied missiles armed with this type of ammunition at targets on the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014, DPA notes.
