Moldova is fighting against an organized criminal network financed from abroad with exorbitant sums worth almost 2% of Moldova's gross domestic product, Prime Minister Dorin Recan said in connection with electoral violations in the recent presidential elections, Moldovan news agency MOLDPRESS reported, quoted by BTA.
He stressed that a “systematic approach” is needed to prevent the repetition of such actions in the long term.
„We are fighting an organized criminal network financed from abroad with exorbitant amounts, almost 2% of Moldova's gross domestic product. Such an attack is unprecedented; it is a new form of hybrid warfare in which the foundation of democracy is under attack. It is important to be quick, ie. we must very quickly investigate cases of criminal acts when their investigation is completed and when prosecution measures have been taken by the prosecution. I repeat, we have a big problem here because 15-20 people are not in prison; they continue to commit fraud and criminal activity”, emphasized Doreen Rechan.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the necessary measures in the justice sector.
„During these days, I worked with teams from the Ministry of Justice, as well as asked the opinion of all independent institutions in this area – The High Council of Magistrates and the High Council of Prosecutors to express opinions and prepare for the next wave of electoral fraud as we have noticed this phenomenon. It was partially stopped by the intervention of the police and judges; however, we need a systematic approach and as mentioned – we cannot act with “white gloves”, we must also change the approach”, said the Prime Minister.
Dorine Rechan said earlier that electoral fraud was on a massive scale in the country's presidential elections. He emphasized that this happened because the justice system did not work well enough. “We need to change the pace and approach in the sector”, noted Rechan.
In these conditions, President Maya Sandu said that it is necessary to shorten the period for examining cases of political corruption. She added that the government and parliament have drawn up a plan to ensure that the cases are dealt with on a priority basis.
