Ukraine adheres to the provisions of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and does not intends to create such, said the official representative of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Giorgi Tikhii.
„Ukraine adheres to the regulations. We do not possess, develop or intend to develop nuclear weapons. Ukraine cooperates closely with the IAEA and is fully transparent to monitoring, which excludes the use of nuclear materials for military purposes,” Tikhii was quoted as saying on the Telegram channel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier, the British newspaper The Times, citing information from the Ukrainian Center for the Study of the Army, Conversion and Disarmament reported that Kiev could quickly create "elementary" nuclear weapons. Excerpts from a report prepared by the center, which the publication cited, stated that due to the lack of uranium enrichment facilities in Ukraine, reactor plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuel could be used to create a nuclear weapon. The country's stockpile of such plutonium is estimated at 7 tons, which, according to the report's authors, is enough to create hundreds of tactical warheads with a power of several kilotons of TNT. The use of reactor plutonium in nuclear weapons will require the use of sophisticated technologies that are estimated to be available to Ukraine.
The document, which according to The Times was handed over to Ukraine's deputy defense minister and also presented to the leadership of enterprises in the Ukrainian military-industrial complex, talks about the possibility of Ukraine withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty of nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, it became clear that support for Ukraine's accession to NATO and the EU has decreased in the country by 7% over the past year and a half. This is shown by the results of a public opinion survey conducted from the International Republican Institute in Ukraine
According to the organization in February 2023. 82% of respondents support Ukraine's European integration policy, and in September 2024 - 75%.
In addition, only 22% of Ukrainians support holding elections before the end of the conflict, 44% are against.
At the same time, when answering the question of who they consider responsible for the current results of the conflict, the majority of respondents pointed to Volodymyr Zelensky and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
