German Interior Minister Nancy Feser condemned the actions of environmental activists from the radical movement Letzte Generation, who organized another protest at Munich airport, and called for all those responsible to be brought to justice.
„Criminal acts like this endanger air traffic and harm climate protection because they only cause misunderstanding and anger,” Fesser wrote on his page X (formerly Twitter). “Perpetrators must consistently be brought to justice and airport security measures must be reviewed”, she stressed.
Earlier, six Letzte Generation activists took to one of the runways at Munich Airport. As a result, the airport had to be closed for about two hours. Arriving planes are diverted to other airports. Activists have been detained.
Eco-activists staged a protest during one of the busiest periods for the airport in the Bavarian capital. In total, about 350 thousand passengers are expected there from Friday to Sunday. During this time, Munich Airport plans to serve 2,860 flights. Overall, during the Whitsun holiday - the second major travel wave of the year after Easter - Munich saw 7% more flights than the previous year.
In the past, members of the movement held similar actions at several airports in Germany. Letzte Generation calls for a stronger fight against climate change, lower speed limits on motorways and lower prices for public transport. Representatives of the movement emphasized that they will hold actions until the German authorities find an optimal solution. The German Cabinet of Ministers has repeatedly criticized their actions.
