New York police detained several protesters who briefly disrupted the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The nationally televised event is emblematic of the holiday, drawing thousands of spectators to Manhattan who enjoy a spectacle of giant balloons with cartoon characters, brass bands and live performances, BTA cited.

According to the police, the protesters were detained without incident, although the exact number of those arrested is not yet known. They are expected to be charged for their actions.

Protest in the rain

A group of about 20 people stood along the parade route in the pouring rain, while behind them others held banners that read things like "Don't celebrate genocide" and "Arms embargo now!". They demonstrated as Ronald McDonald the Clown's giant balloon passed overhead – iconic symbol of "McDonalds".

Police initially called on the protesters to disperse. Officers on bicycles then arrived and pushed the demonstrators off the parade route.

Readiness to respond

The New York police had said in advance that they did not expect protest actions during the parade, but were prepared to respond if necessary. Despite these assurances, the demonstration managed to temporarily disrupt the flow of the event.

The Thanksgiving Day Parade remains one of America's greatest traditions, symbolizing the holiday spirit despite incidents and rising tensions surrounding global conflicts.
