The defense ministers of Japan, South Korea and the US Minoru Kihara, Shin Won-sik and Lloyd Austin agreed to “ institutionalize trilateral defense cooperation”, including holding trilateral military exercises in the summer. This was announced by the Japanese Ministry of Defense after their meeting on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue Forum in Singapore.
„They agreed to institutionalize trilateral security cooperation, including high-level political consultations, information sharing, trilateral exercises and defense exchange cooperation through the development of a framework for trilateral cooperation,” the department said in a statement.
In particular, the countries agreed to hold trilateral maneuvers in the summer, as well as trilateral staff exercises to discuss regional security issues. The exercise will be called Freedome Edge. No details have been released regarding the number of participants in the exercises and the equipment that will be involved.
The importance of cooperation in this format was explained by the Japanese Ministry of Defense as an “increasingly complex security situation”, including on the Korean Peninsula.
