US President Joe Biden said he will not use his presidential powers to reduce the possible sentence that his son Hunter Biden could receive after being found guilty of gun possession, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
Biden said this after the end of a press conference at the G-7 summit. When asked if he planned to commute his son's sentence, he said he would not do so. Hunter Biden's sentencing date has not been set, and the three charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years, though that is unlikely for a first-time offense.
Ultimately, it will be up to U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, who was nominated by former Republican President Donald Trump, to determine how long, if any, Hunter Biden is sentenced to.
Biden's comments come just a day after the White House refused to rule out a potential reduction in Hunter Biden's sentence. Both the president and the White House have said for months that Biden will not pardon his son.
"I am extremely proud of my son Hunter. He has overcome his addiction. "He is one of the smartest and most honorable men I know," Biden said earlier in his press conference yesterday. "I respect the jury's decision. I will do that and I will not pardon him," the US president said.
