According to the official census in 2001, the Bulgarian community in Ukraine numbered 204 thousand people. Bulgarians live compactly in Odesa, Zaporizhia, Nikolaevka and Kirovograd regions.
In the Odesa region, they are third in number and number over 150,000 people. About 50-60 thousand Bulgarians live in the city of Odesa. The largest compact Bulgarian population is concentrated in the Bolgrad, Izmail and Belgorodnist regions.

The oldest settlement of the Bulgarians is within the borders of the modern Kirovohrad region – Olshanka village, Dobroe and Stankuvata villages. The settlement of the first settlers dates back to 1774. According to the last population census in Ukraine from 2001, 2,305 people live in Kirovohrad region, according to unofficial data, they are more. Bulgarians mainly live in the Olshan region.
The first Bulgarian settlers near the city of Nikolaev founded the Bulgarian settlement of Ternovka in 1802. At the beginning of the 21st century, Ternovka was joined as a neighborhood to the regional center of Nikolaev. The Bulgarian population in Ternovka is mainly and consists of nearly 6 thousand people.
