German MP: Borisov and Peevski discredit democracy - 1

"With the constant elections, Bulgaria has been spinning in circles for years. Powerful puppeteers like Borisov and Peevski discredit democracy," commented a politician from the German SPD, who is the rapporteur for Bulgaria.

Before the elections, the leader of GERB, Boyko Borisov, outlined the prospect of forming a coalition to put an end to the political instability in the country. However, after his failure to form a government with the first term, “the poorest country in the EU is heading for a new political crisis,", commented EURACTIV.

For the first time, DPS splits

For this outcome of the vote in the parliament, an important role was played by the split in the party of the Turkish minority DPS – otherwise one of the most stable parties in Bulgaria after the end of the totalitarian regime in 1989, we read further in the EURACTIV publication.

The background of this split is the conflict between the acting co-chairman Delyan Peevski and the honorary chairman and founder of the party Ahmed Dogan, the publication explains. It recalls that Peevski, sanctioned by the USA and Great Britain for corruption, is the first ethnic Bulgarian to head the DPS since its foundation 34 years ago, and the current split is the first in the history of this party.

German MP calls on EPP and ALDE to take a stand

Thomas Hacker, the rapporteur for Bulgaria of the German Free Democratic Party (FDP), also issued a press release. It says the following:

„With the constant new elections, Bulgaria has been spinning in circles for years. And at a time when it is important to act quickly. Chronic political instability exacerbates already overwhelming disillusionment with politics and increases the public's political apathy. This cycle must be broken.

Powerful puppeteers such as Boyko Borisov and the sanctioned tycoon Delyan Peevski discredit democracy and try in vain to secure power. And since there seems to be no way out of the political crisis under these circumstances, it is desirable that their European sister parties EPP and ALDE send out some kind of signal," Hacker's statement added.
