British PM apologizes for disastrous performance and resigns - 1

The current British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak apologized today after the Conservative Party recorded its worst ever election result under his leadership , and Labor achieved a convincing victory and Keir Starmer will be the new British Prime Minister, DPA reported, BTA reported.

Sunak said he would step down as Conservative leader once his successor had been chosen. This move of his will potentially lead to further intra-party clashes in the Conservative Party, DPA notes. Starmer will be the next prime minister after the Conservatives suffered a heavy defeat in which former prime minister Liz Truss and dozens of other government members lost their seats.

In a statement to the government office in Downing Street; Number 10 in London Sunak said: "I will soon be meeting His Majesty the King to tender my resignation as Prime Minister. To the whole country, I would first of all like to say: "I'm sorry. I gave my all to this post but you have sent a clear signal that the UK government needs to change. And your judgment is the only one that matters. I heard your anger, your frustration, and I take responsibility for this loss."

With clear results for 648 of the 650 seats in the lower house of the British Parliament, Labor has a majority of 412 seats to 121 for the Conservatives. "After this result, I will resign as party leader – not immediately, but after the selection of my successor is arranged. It is important that after 14 years in power, the Conservative Party recovers, but also takes on its critically important role of opposition in a professional and effective manner," Sunak also said.

"Today is a difficult day, coming after a number of difficult days. But I am leaving this post having had the honor of being your Prime Minister. It's the best country in the world. And that is entirely down to you, the British people - the true source of our achievements, our strength and our greatness," he added.

After his speech at "Downing Street" Sunak drove to Buckingham Palace to resign as Prime Minister. Once he has done this, Starmer will meet with King Charles III to accept responsibility for forming a government.
