The German Ministry of Defense has confirmed that it is developing emergency plans for the movement of "hundreds of thousands“ NATO soldiers through its territory in case of war with the Russian Federation. The reason for this was reports in the media that preparations are intensifying against the background of an indirect conflict between the West and Moscow, writes Newsweek.
A representative of the Bundeswehr National Defense Command in Berlin confirmed to the publication that the secret "Operational Plan for Germany” (OPLAN DEU) "is continuously developed under the responsibility of the Bundeswehr National Defense Command and constantly updated”.
These words come after Der Spiegel reported last week that Berlin was preparing to move around 800,000 NATO troops and 200,000 pieces of equipment through its territory if tensions with Russia escalated into full-scale war.
"The ability to rapidly redeploy large NATO forces to the Alliance's eastern flank in the event of a deteriorating security situation is a central pillar of conventional deterrence. An important German objective is to ensure the planned deployment and supply of Allied and German forces, especially through host country support, which is a nation-wide task with Germany as the central hub. According to NATO's plans, several hundred thousand soldiers should be provided with permanent logistics and medical assistance, explained a spokesperson of the command.
Der Spiegel journalists reported that German and NATO planners are considering how to deploy this massive force along the country's main transport routes, focusing on the 300km A2 motorway that runs from the western city of Oberhausen to the outskirts of Berlin in the east of the country, near the Polish borders. Such a route and several key bridges along it are expected to become prime targets for Russian strikes in the event of war.
"The planning takes into account not only one highway as the axis of traffic in Germany, but also many autobahns and federal highways. An example of such a west-east axis is the A2 central highway. To this end, the OPLAN DEU defines the requirements for the Bundeswehr as well as the requirements for other state and civilian structures in the field of defense, which is a national and public task. For reasons of military security, we cannot go into details and therefore cannot confirm the data stated in the article ", emphasized the representative of the Berlin command.
According to him, it is most likely that the enemy can take measures to interfere or delay the movement of NATO troops.
"The exact identification of the risks to which the relevant infrastructure may be exposed, where and what should be done in this case, is part of our constant analysis of threats and a constant process of exchange of views with the civilian side“, assured the representative of the command.
