Taiwan has shown its missile firepower, reports "Reuters" .
The country fired surface-to-air missiles in front of reporters during a rare visit to a test site in a remote part of the island's southeast coast.
Democratically ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its territory, has complained of increased Chinese military activity. Beijing is seeking to assert its sovereignty claims, and Taipei is strengthening its deterrence capabilities.
Missiles are a key part of Taiwan's defense strategy. Among them there are both manufactured in the USA and developed in the country.
The test, conducted at dawn at the Jiupeng base, fired both US-made Patriot and Taiwan-made Sky Bow III missiles, and a warship off the coast fired RIM-66 Standard missiles.
"All the missiles that were fired today smoothly reached their target and proved two things - the first is that the training of our soldiers is very stable and the second is that our weapon systems have been verified during this process of combat missile launch," said Defense Ministry spokesman Sun Li-fan.
"In general, we achieved our goals,", he summarized.
In "Jiupeng" the government-run weapons developer National Institute of Science and Technology "Chung-shan" is testing new missiles, such as the longer-range Hsiung Feng model, which is designed to strike targets deep inside China.
Taiwan's government rejects China's territorial claims and emphasizes that only the people of the island can decide their future.
