The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is arrived in the Middle East. This is happening against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region, AP specified. The agency cited Pentagon data.
As reported by the US War Department, the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, has ordered the rapid transfer of the aircraft carrier strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln from the Pacific Ocean to the Middle East in connection with possible Iranian strikes against Israel in response to the assassination in Tehran of the head of the politburo of Hamas Ismail Haniya.
Hamas holds Israel responsible for Haniya's death, while claiming that the US side, along with Israel, is responsible for the incident.
The leader of "Hezbollah" Hassan Nasrallah said that the death of Haniya and the commander of "Hezbollah" Fuad Shukr in an Israeli strike in Beirut signals a new phase of the conflict with Israel on many fronts.
Currently, the US carrier group, led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, is already in the Middle East near the Gulf of Oman.
According to the US Department of Defense, the USS Georgia nuclear submarine, which can carry up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, is in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Eastern Mediterranean is also home to the US Navy's amphibious readiness group, consisting of the amphibious assault ship Wasp, which carries fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jets, the amphibious transport dock Oak Hill; and the amphibious landing helicopter dock "New York". The group's ships include the 24th Marine Expeditionary Battalion.
The group is at least 2,000 Marines strong. Two US missile destroyers are also on operational missions there.
In all, the US has already concentrated 12 warships in the Middle East amid the escalation of the situation in the region.
