Over 6,000 migrants have arrived in the Canary Islands in July and August, reported BNR. Spanish authorities note that this is a record for the summer period since detailed statistics of illegal arrivals have been kept.
6,267 people came illegally to the archipelago in the last two months.
Almost half of them - 3220 new cases were registered in the second half of August. This is according to the data of the Ministry of the Interior of Spain.
This is a record of the migrant flow to the Canary Islands in July and August for the years after 2019, in which there is a gradual increase. Last year, 4,200 migrants arrived, the previous two years there were about two thousand.
This year, over 25,000 migrants reached the archipelago, an increase of 123% compared to the first eight months of 2023. The total number of illegal arrivals in Spain until August 31 is over 35 thousand people.
