Taiwan's Ministry of Defense said it is observing Chinese amphibious exercises taking place in province on the opposite shore of the Taiwan Strait, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
A statement from the department said it had observed Chinese fighter jets, helicopters, drones, as well as amphibious and cargo ships loaded with ground troops conducting "joint stand-off exercises" since Tuesday.
The drills are taking place around Daqing Bay in China's southeastern Fujian province, which is opposite Taiwan, the Defense Ministry said, adding that it was monitoring the situation closely.
China, which considers democratically-ruled Taiwan its territory, has stepped up military and political pressure over the past five years to enforce its claims, which Taipei strongly rejects, according to Reuters.
A report by the island's Ministry of Defense presented to parliament last week claimed that China does not possess "full" capabilities to invade Taiwan as it lacks the necessary equipment.
China last staged large-scale military exercises around Taiwan in May, shortly after the island's newly elected president, William Lai, took office. Beijing considers Lai a "separatist".
