Severe floods in Nigeria have claimed the lives of over 600 people, AP reported, quoted by BTA, citing of local authorities.
This is the first such disaster in the African country for nearly 10 years, the agency specifies. Nearly 15 percent of the territory of Maiduguri - the capital of Borno state - is under water, said local police spokesman Nahum Daso.
Ezequiel Manzo, spokesman for the country's emergency service, said yesterday that the death toll in this northeastern region was 30.
"One million people have been left homeless," said the Borno state government.
