Finnish president calls for repeal of UN Security Council veto - 1

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has called for the expansion of the UN Security Council, the abolition of the veto power of individual states and the removal of any member state that is involved in an “illegal war”, as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, reports Reuters, quoted by BTA.

Stubb said he would support demands for reforms during the UN General Assembly, where the composition of the 15-member Security Council will be discussed. The permanent members who have the right to veto are 5, and the remaining 10 are changed on a rotational basis.

The Finnish president said in an interview with Reuters that, in his opinion, the number of permanent members should be increased to 10. He proposed that two countries each from Africa and Asia, as well as one from Latin America, join them.

The United States, Russia, China, France and Great Britain also support the accession of two African countries to the permanent members of the Security Council.

“No country should have veto power in the UN Security Council,” said Stubb. He added that any member of the Security Council participating in an illegal war, “like Russia is currently waging in Ukraine”, should be expelled.

All changes to the composition of the Security Council must be approved by two-thirds of the General Assembly, including the five veto-wielding states.
