North Korea tests new tactical ballistic missiles using super-large warheads and modified cruise missiles under the leadership of leader Kim Jong-un, who has called for stronger conventional weapons and nuclear capabilities, the KCTA agency reported, quoted by BTA.
Tests to improve weapons capabilities are necessary because of the serious threat that foreign powers pose to the country's security, Kim was quoted as saying, Reuters reported.
KCTA is likely reporting Wednesday's launch of multiple short-range ballistic missiles, which the South Korean military said was the second time North Korea has tested missiles in a week.
Last week, Pyongyang also revealed a uranium enrichment facility in the first such case in history, Reuters recalls.
Kim Jong-un stressed "the need to continue to strengthen nuclear forces and to have the strongest military-technical capabilities and crushing offensive capability in the field of conventional armed forces,", KCTA reported his words.
The tests yesterday involved the new tactical ballistic missiles, which are part of a series of short-range ballistic missiles believed to have been exported to Russia, Reuters noted.
Kiev officials and independent experts said there were signs that some of the missiles used by Russia in the war against Ukraine were made in North Korea.
A 4.5-ton ultra-large conventional warhead was mounted on the tested missile, KCTA reported.
The tests also included a strategic cruise missile that had been upgraded for combat use.
