Russian army advances in Donetsk region - 1

Russia claims it has captured a new village in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, where its soldiers are gaining ground against those of Kiev, AFP reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that its army had captured the village of Georgievka, located between the town of Marinka, captured by Moscow in late 2023, and Kurakhov, controlled by Ukrainian troops.

Moscow regularly claims it has captured small villages in the Donetsk region. On Saturday, its army said it had captured the area of Zhelane Pershe, about ten kilometers north of Georgievka. Last week, it claimed that it had also captured the city of Krasnogorovka. In this region, Russia is trying to capture the city of Pokrovsk, which is a major logistics center for the Ukrainian army.

On August 6, Ukraine, which is struggling in the east, launched a large-scale offensive in Russia's Kursk region, which Kiev says has captured several hundred square kilometers. The hope was that this would force Moscow to redeploy its troops into the Donetsk region and thus limit their advance, but for now Russian troops continue to advance.

Russia, for its part, claims that since last week it has taken back several villages in the Kursk region from Ukrainian troops. However, the spokesman of the Ukrainian regional command Oleksiy Dmytrachkivskii told AFP yesterday that the Russian counter-offensive in the Kursk region had stopped.

Simultaneously with the fighting on the front line, strikes are continuing elsewhere in Ukraine. Two civilians were killed and two others were wounded during shelling of a village in the Sumy region bordering Russia, regional authorities announced today.

Six civilians were injured this morning in another attack in Kupyansk, a city in the Kharkiv region, the regional prosecutor's office added.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced today that it shot down several Ukrainian drones in the border regions of Belgorod and Kursk regions.
