Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena resigned, reported the Daily Mirror newspaper, citing a letter from the Prime Minister to the winner of the presidential election, Anur Kumar Dissanayake.
In his address, Gunawardena indicated that he was leaving his post due to the election of a new president to “create space” to appoint a new government.
On September 22, Dissanayake announced that parliamentary elections would be held soon. He did not specify the time of their implementation.
In Sri Lanka, the president appoints the prime minister, and the members of the cabinet are also chosen on his recommendation.
