Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena resigned, newspaper reported Daily Mirror in relation to the Prime Minister's letter to the winner of the presidential election Anur Kumar Dissanayake.

In his address Gunawardena indicated that he was leaving office in connection with the election of a new president in order to “create space“ to appoint a new government.

On September 22, Dissanayake announced that parliamentary elections would be held soon. He did not specify the time of their implementation.

In Sri Lanka, the president appoints the prime minister and, on his recommendation, the members of the cabinet, as well as the composition of the key departments on the proposal of the Constitutional Council (among its members are the prime minister, the speaker of the parliament, the leader of the opposition in the parliament, members of the public).
