Turkish Foreign Minister called for a comprehensive reform of the UN - 1

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that it is necessary to a complete reform of the UN was carried out, Turkish media reported, quoted by BTA.

"We need a fairer, more comprehensive and multilateral model. It is necessary to carry out a full-scale reform in the UN, and in particular in the UN Security Council. The world is bigger than the five (permanent member countries of the UN Security Council: Russia, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and China – note ed.)", Fidan said once again last night, speaking at the Summit about the future of the United Nations at the headquarters of the organization in New York.

"We must democratize the UN decision-making system. Resolutions that are passed by a majority in the General Assembly cannot be implemented because of the Security Council. International security cannot be left only to a privileged group of countries," the Turkish foreign minister also pointed out.

In his words, “it is imperative to reform the system of international financing, which is necessary to achieve the permanent development goals”.

"We also need a new set of effective tools and mechanisms to promote dialogue at a time of increasing polarization in the world. Our ability to find solutions to conflicts and crises is diminishing. And inequalities in income distribution are deepening. This leads to the rise of extremism, Islamophobia and xenophobia. At the same time, the imbalance in the political, financial, social and cultural spheres is constantly deepening," Fidan said.

Unfortunately, the UN cannot show the leadership it should have in the face of increasing threats to humanity, he added.

Fidan pointed out that the international community and the UN are going through a “historic test”, adding that their ability to find solutions to end crises and conflicts has decreased.
