Four arrested in Germany in anti-trafficking operation - 1

At least four people have been detained in South West Germany in a series of actions carried out on suspicion of human trafficking, reports "Reuters", quoted by News.bg.

Operations were carried out in Mannheim and in the areas around Karlsruhe and Worms, and a total of 24 properties were searched, a police spokesman explained.

A total of 400 police officers took part in the actions, with the participation of the federal police, the prosecutor's office and the central customs.

The investigation began after one of the migrants in question was detained while trying to leave Germany via Frankfurt airport.

The case concerns a group of migrants from the Caucasus region who were illegally brought into Germany to work illegally and therefore below the legal minimum wage, including at construction sites, the spokesperson specified.

Earlier this month, the German government imposed tighter controls on all of the country's land borders in an effort to tackle illegal migration and protect society from security threats.

The restrictions are part of a series of measures Germany has taken to toughen its stance on illegal migration in recent years following a surge in arrivals.
