Half-meter tsunami hits island south of Tokyo after 5.8-magnitude earthquake in the area, reported "Kyodo", referring to the Japanese Meteorological Service, quoted by BTA.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at 08:14 local time (02:14 Bulgarian time), was located in the waters near the island of Torishima in the Izu island chain, in the Pacific Ocean. The tsunami was registered at 08:54 local time on Hachijo Island, and waves of 20 cm and 10 cm were recorded on Kozu and Miyake islands respectively, according to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency issued a tsunami warning for the islands of Izu and Ogasawara shortly after the quake, but canceled it at 11:00 a.m. local time after determining that activity had subsided sufficiently. The earthquake was initially recorded as a magnitude of 5.9, but was later revised down to 5.8.

Tokyo police said there were no reports of damage.

Nowhere did the quake reach category one intensity or higher on Japan's seven-level seismic intensity scale, authorities said. The Japanese seismicity scale categorizes earthquakes by intensity, not magnitude.

The quake follows a warning issued on Thursday for volcanic activity in the sea around Smith Island, near the epicenter. The service observed sea discoloration caused by volcanic activity and warned vessels in the area of a possible underwater eruption and floating debris such as volcanic rock.

The link between volcanic activity and the earthquake is still under investigation.
