Over 100 members of the Bundestag (the lower house of the German parliament) have supported an initiative to ban the far-right party Alternative for Germany. (AzG), announced Marco Vanderwitz – deputy from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), reported DPA.
Vanderwitz said he secured the support of 113 MPs from various political parties in the 733-seat lower house of parliament. They are trying to pass a resolution banning the AzG in the Bundestag and want the Constitutional Court to rule on whether the far-right party carries out activities that are in conflict with the Basic Law.
German domestic intelligence has included the AzG in its list of organizations suspected of right-wing extremist activities. However, only the Bundestag, the Bundesrat (the upper house of the German parliament) or the federal government can bring a claim to ban a political party.
Asked if lawmakers would be able to debate the proposal before the election, which is expected to be held on February 23, Vanderwitz said there would be a debate before the end of the current legislative period. However, according to him, it is not clear whether the proposal will be voted on.
