The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be announced next week, on October 11, the Associated Press and Agence France-Presse recall. This is happening at a time when the world is engulfed by over 50 conflicts, among which the largest are those in Ukraine and Gaza, which are expanding into Lebanon and include Iran, quoted by BTA.
Dan Smith, director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, proposed the idea of a "white year" without a prize, emphasizing the failure of efforts to achieve peace. He notes that the death toll in conflicts has increased significantly in the past two years, making the situation extremely dangerous.
However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is adamant that there will be a worthy candidate for the award this year. There are 286 nominees, but their names are kept secret for 50 years. However, some nominations have been made public, including organizations involved in the Middle East conflict, such as the UN agency for Palestinian refugees and human rights groups from the region.
Other possible candidates include organizations outside the Middle East region, such as the Sudanese Emergency Response Centers and the Stop Killer Robots coalition, which fights against autonomous weapons systems.
Last year, the prize was awarded to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who is imprisoned in Iran.
