Russia tested the combat readiness of a unit equipped with intercontinental ballistic missiles "Yars" in a region northwest of Moscow, the Ministry of Defense said on Friday, quoted by "Reuters". and News.bg.

The Yars, which can be deployed in silos or mounted on mobile launchers, has a range of up to 11,000 km (6,835 miles) and is capable of delivering multiple nuclear warheads.

Russia has conducted a series of nuclear exercises this year, which security analysts say is a signal intended to deter the West from getting more involved in the war in Ukraine.

The current exercise is taking place in the same week that NATO held its annual nuclear drill and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky unveiled his "plan for victory".

Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month that Moscow had expanded the list of scenarios that could prompt it to use nuclear weapons, effectively lowering the threshold for their use. Ukraine accused Moscow of nuclear blackmail.

In the last test, a unit in the Tver region will practice moving Yars missiles. in the field at distances of up to 100 km, under camouflage and with protection against air attack and enemy sabotage groups, Interfax quoted the Ministry of Defense.

Previously, Russia conducted two rounds of exercises with Yars missile units. in July. Moscow has also held three series of drills this year to test preparations for launching tactical nuclear missiles, which have a shorter range and smaller capacity than intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Throughout the war, Putin has often reminded Russia that it has the world's largest nuclear arsenal, but insists it does not need to resort to nuclear weapons to achieve victory in Ukraine.
