Romania raises fighter jets after airspace violation by unidentified object - 1

Romania raised four fighter jets yesterday after unidentified object violated its airspace space in the southeastern part of the country, near the Black Sea. The announcement was made by the Ministry of National Defense, quoted by the Associated Press, quoted by BTA.

The radar monitoring system of the Romanian armed forces detected a small object, probably a drone, that was moving over the Black Sea in the direction of Romania at around 17:00 local time. The country is a member of the EU and NATO and has previously detected Russian drones entering its airspace as Moscow attacks Ukrainian targets in the region. Fragments of Russian drones have repeatedly been found on Romanian territory near the border with Ukraine.

Yesterday, in response to the incident, two Spanish F-18 fighters and two Romanian F-16s were dispatched to monitor the site. According to radar signals, it crossed into Romanian airspace near the coastal town of Eforie Nord, Constanta County, and entered up to 14 kilometers inland in Romania. Fighters failed to spot the target, which soon disappeared from radar. An investigation of the possible crash site is scheduled to begin today.
