Egypt and Turkey: Strengthening Diplomatic and Economic Ties - 1

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati arrives in Ankara today for a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, BTA reports.

The main purpose of the visit is to discuss all aspects of relations between the two countries, as well as prepare for the upcoming meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, scheduled for 2026.

The meeting is expected to highlight the desire to deepen bilateral ties in 2025, when 100 years of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Turkey will be celebrated. In this context, the importance of stimulating investment with the aim of reaching a bilateral trade volume of 15 billion dollars will also be discussed.

Regional challenges and humanitarian aid

Among the key topics of the discussion will be current regional issues such as the situation in Gaza, the crises in Syria, Libya, the Horn of Africa and the Sahel. The Turkish side will emphasize the need for cooperation with Egypt in efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Another important topic will be the fight against terrorism in Syria, including actions against the PKK/YPG (Kurdistan Workers' Party/People's Protection Forces) and Daesh (“Islamic State“) groups. The two sides will discuss joint measures to stabilize the region.

Dynamics of Diplomatic Contacts

The Ankara meeting is part of the intensive diplomatic dialogue between Egypt and Turkey. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan visited Cairo on December 18, 2024, on the occasion of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the D-8 countries. The two ministers also held talks during the meeting on Syria, which took place in Riyadh on January 12.

The upcoming talks in Ankara highlight the two countries' aspiration to strengthen the strategic partnership and deepen cooperation in various fields.
