Australian senator Lydia Thorpe sharply attacked the King of Great Britain Charles III after his speech in the Australian Parliament today, accusing it of genocide against the indigenous people of Commonwealth of Nations countries. In his speech, Thorpe stated: "You are not my king, you are not our king," reported PA Media and DPA, quoted by BTA.
King Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, have been visiting Australia since Friday, arriving in the capital Canberra from Sydney today. After Charles' speech ended, Senator Thorpe took to the podium and criticized the British monarchy.
"Give us back our land. Give us back what you stole... Our babies, our people... You have destroyed our land. We want a treaty with this country... This is not your land," declared Thorpe, who was carefully led out of the hall.
As she was taken away, she shouted: "You are not my king, you are not our king... You committed genocide against our people," PA Media and DPA continue.
Later today, the King and Queen will travel to Samoa for a three-day state visit where they will meet with leaders from Commonwealth of Nations countries. Charles will officially open the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting.
