At least six people were killed when unknown assailants attacked a passenger bus in Papua New Guinea, transmitted by Papua New Guinea Post-Courier.

According to the publication, a group of unknown persons opened fire on a passenger bus near the town of Porgera, located 700 km northwest of the country's capital, Port Moresby. According to New Guinea Police Commissioner David Manning, the incident happened on October 22 at around 16:00 local time. "The bus was ambushed. Six people have been confirmed dead, 19 others were injured and are in serious condition, he said, noting that police have “already begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting”.

Manning also explained that during the attack, some passengers tried to flee the crime scene and hide. However, they did not manage to get far and the gunmen shot them.

Inter-tribal clashes in the vicinity of the town of Porgera, home to a gold mine that closed almost two years ago, escalated into fierce gun battles on September 16. As a result of the violence caused by the actions of illegal miners who want to take control of the mine, 32 people were killed and more than 60 were injured.
