The leaders of the main political groups in the European Parliament reached an agreement on preliminary support for all candidates for European Commissioners. This was reported on the social network "X". from the groups of Socialists and Democrats (SiD), "Renew Europe" and The Greens, quoted by BTA.
The European Parliament is expected to confirm the full composition of the new European Commission with a formal vote on November 27. The political groups EPP, SID and < strong>"Renew Europe" signed last night a nine-point cooperation agreement based on EC President Ursula von der Leyen's management program for the next mandate.
Limitations on Powers and Criticisms
The group "Renew Europe" announced that it has been agreed that the powers of the Hungarian European Commissioner Oliver Varhey will be limited. Varhei is the only candidate to whom the EP requested additional written answers after his hearing.
The opposition group "Patriots for Europe", which is not part of the coalition agreement, expressed sharp criticism, calling the agreements reached "non-transparent" and result of "dirty deals".
The Greens also criticized the EPP for not clearly distancing themselves from far-right forces in the European Parliament. They emphasized that they do not support the candidacies of Varhey and the Italian candidate for EC vice-president Rafaele Fito, despite their earlier support for von der Leyen's re-election.
Majority for the new commission
The groups of EPP, SID and "Renew Europe" have a total of 401 votes, while for the approval of the new composition of the European Commission 360 are needed. If elected, the new commission will take office on December 1.
