It is claimed that Donald Trump is met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed Ukraine-related issues with him, Republican Congressman Michael McCaul said in an interview with the Atlantic Council.
„I know that the newly elected president met with Putin and said: “Please do not escalate the situation”. He didn't follow his advice”, McCall said.
Earlier, The Washington Post, citing its sources, wrote that Trump had a telephone conversation with Putin. The Republican is said to have called for the conflict in Ukraine not to escalate. WP also noted that Trump has expressed interest in further talks to discuss a quick resolution to the Ukrainian conflict.
The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, denied this information, calling it pure fiction. He added that there are still no concrete plans for contacts between the Russian leader and the Republican who won the election.
Putin has previously said he has no objection to resuming contacts and does not consider it shameful to call Trump. In turn, Peskov noted that, theoretically, the Russian leader can contact the newly elected US president himself, but it is necessary to monitor how events will develop further.
