A pregnant teacher from the United States fell into a 50-meter abyss and died, bTV reported. The incident occurred on the island of Crete.
Smiling happily with her hands on her stomach. Behind her, the sun slowly sets over the Cretan Sea. This is one of the last photos of a 33-year-old pregnant teacher. American Clara is six months pregnant. Together with her partner Elliot, they spend a few days on the Greek island of Crete.
This was to be the last trip for the couple before their son was born. The teacher from California had already revealed the name they had chosen for the baby to their relatives. The incident occurred on December 23. The couple had gone on a hike around Plakias on the southern coast of Crete. According to GreekReporter, Clara lost her balance near the Preveli Monastery and fell 50 meters into a precipice.
The place turned out to be so inaccessible that 21 firefighters and other rescuers needed hours - until late at night - to reach Clara. The American was transported first to a medical center in Rethymnon, and then to a hospital in Chania.
The baby did not survive the fall in her mother's womb. Meanwhile, Clara is fighting for her life in intensive care. She has fractures all over her body and severe injuries to her skull and chest. On December 29, her partner and family learned the sad news - doctors declared Clara brain dead. Her loved ones decided to turn off life support systems on the spot.
„Clara loved to help and teach others. "We will be donating organs and are delighted that her heart, liver and pancreas have now been accepted for donation," the American woman's family said on the online platform CaringBridge. Clara's body has been transported to Athens for cremation on January 1. Her partner Elliot will scatter some of her ashes at various locations in Greece and Turkey that they both wanted to visit. The majority of the ashes will travel to the United States to Clara's family.
