17-year-old shoots female student, kills self at Nashville high school VIDEO - 1

A student was killed and another student was wounded in a shooting at a Nashville high school cafeteria today, police said, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

The 17-year-old shooter, who was also a student at the high school, later shot himself and killed himself, Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said at a news conference.

A spokesman for Vanderbilt University Medical Center told News 2 that another student was taken to Vanderbilt Pediatrics for treatment of an eye injury that occurred after the shooting.

Aaron said two school employees were in the building at the time of the shooting. They were not in the immediate vicinity of the cafeteria where the shooting occurred, and by the time they got there, the shooting had stopped and the shooter had used the gun to kill himself.

The school has about 2,000 students and is located in a neighborhood about 10 miles southeast of downtown Nashville.

School officials asked parents not to go to the high school to pick up their children, but instead to go to a nearby hospital. Students were taken there by buses while police escorted them from the school.
