Russian shelling killed three people in the eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk on Sunday, the regional governor said, as quoted by Reuters and BTA.
Vadim Filashkin, the governor of Donetsk region, also wrote on the messaging app Telegram that one person had been wounded in the Russian attack.
He said one person had been wounded in Kramatorsk, a city further north and almost certainly one of Russia's long-term targets in eastern Ukraine.
For months, Russian forces have focused on advancing on Pokrovsk, a logistics hub and home to Ukraine's only coking coal mine - closed as Moscow's troops approached.
But in recent weeks, Ukrainian military report success in deterring Russian forces in the area.
